I have been living with my now fiance for 3 years in the US. He is an Australia citizen. We got engaged and want to move by the end of the year. What is our best option in terms of processing times, yo apply as de facto and get married next year or get married first and apply as married?

They are all the same.  Getting married before still does not negate the need to prove 12 months relationship prior to application.

In your case it makes no difference.
